A good interior detail is less about using dozens of products and more about working in the right order. Moving from the dirtiest, driest work to the cleaner finishing steps reduces repeated effort and helps prevent dust and debris from landing on surfaces you already cleaned.
1. Remove loose items first
Take out floor mats, trash, personal items and anything that blocks access to seats, consoles or storage areas. This gives you a clear view of the surfaces that actually need attention.
2. Vacuum before wet cleaning
Vacuum seats, carpet, floor areas, crevices and accessible storage spaces before introducing liquid cleaners. Use brushes or pet-hair tools where debris is trapped in fabric or carpet.
3. Work from upper surfaces downward
Clean dashboards, screens, vents, door panels and trim before moving to lower panels and floors. Apply cleaner to a towel or brush when appropriate rather than oversaturating electronics, switches or seams.
4. Clean seats and touch points
Use a product suited to the seat material and follow the manufacturer's directions. Steering wheels, handles, armrests and controls often need more attention because they are touched frequently.
5. Finish glass last
Interior glass is easier to finish after dust, cleaners and dressings are no longer moving around the cabin. Use a dedicated glass towel and work in good lighting so streaks are easier to spot.
6. Inspect before replacing mats
Give surfaces time to dry, check for residue, then reinstall the mats and other items you removed.
